INTENDED PURPOSE:
NOVAtest® Fecal Occult Blood/Transferrin Joint Test is an immunochromatographic membrane assay that uses the double antibody sandwich method for qualitative detection of human hemoglobin and transferrin from feces specimen. It’s used as an aid in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding caused by gastrointestinal diseases such as colon polyps, colorectal carcinoma, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. This device is performed manually.
INTENDED USER:
Performance of the test is limited to laboratory professional use.
SUMMARY:
Fecal occult blood (FOB) refers to a small amount of blood in the stool. Generally, the appearance of the stool does not change, and blood is not easily found in the stool. Many diseases can cause feacal occult blood. In the early stage of some gastrointestinal problems such as colorectal cancer, ulcers, polyps, colitis, diverticulitis, and fissures may not show any visible symptoms, only occult blood. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide and one of the leading causes of cancer-related death. Therefore, the detection of feacal occult blood can detect the symptoms of cancer at an early stage and allow patients to get medical treatment in time.
Transferrin is a β-globulin, synthesized primarily in the liver, which is the principal protein responsible for iron transport. Transferrin can leak into the gastrointestinal tract during gastrointestinal bleeding and it can be detected in feces. Transferrin is a potential marker for gastrointestinal bleeding caused by gastrointestinal diseases such as colon polyps, colorectal carcinoma, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Several studies have shown that the combined use of both fecal Transferrin and Haemoglobin as biomarkers results in higher rates of positivity in colorectal cancer screening.
