INTENDED PURPOSE:
NOVAtest® Transferrin Test is an immunochromatographic membrane assay that uses the double antibody sandwich method for qualitative detection of human transferrin from feces specimen. It’s used as an aid in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal bleeding caused by gastrointestinal diseases such as colon polyps, colorectal carcinoma, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. This device is performed manually.
INTENDED USER:
Performance of the test is limited to laboratory professional use.
SUMMARY:
Transferrin is a β-globulin, synthesized primarily in the liver, which is the principal protein responsible for iron transport. Transferrin can leak into the gastrointestinal tract during gastrointestinal bleeding and it can be detected in feces. Compared to hemoglobin, which is easily degraded by enterobacteria and digestive enzymes, Transferrin is more stable to digestive enzymes.
Transferrin is a potential marker for gastrointestinal bleeding caused by gastrointestinal diseases such as colon polyps, colorectal carcinoma, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Several studies have shown that the combined use of both fecal Transferrin and Haemoglobin as biomarkers results in higher rates of positivity in colorectal cancer screening.
