SUMMARY:

Human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV), include HIV-I and HIV-II, are pathogenic retroviruses that cause HIV infection and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It was estimated that 38.4 million people worldwide are living with HIV and 650,000 people dying from HIV-related causes in 2021. HIV infection causes gradual failure of the immune system in human, leading to an increased susceptibility of the body to life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers. Both HIV-I and HIV-II can elicit strong immune responses. HIV-I is endemic globally, while HIV-II is only endemic in west Africa. Presence of specific anti-HIV-I or anti-HIV-II antibodies in serum and plasma, indicates the exposure of an individual to the HIV-I or HIV- II which is of great value for clinical diagnosis. The serological methods are widely used in the laboratory diagnosis of HIV-I and HIV-II infection.
